Chapter 8

That Festival is finally about to start. Maybe I should step out? How many times have I counted my supplies now? No, I’d better stay here. If I’m jittery now, it’ll be worse around the vamps. I can’t afford to do anything stupid. I only gotta live a little longer to get to Cat.

I need to survive this . . . I also need to kill some vampires because this is way too good an opportunity to pass up. How am I gonna do this?

Shit, someone’s at the door!

From outside, a voice says, “Open the fucking door! Michael sent us, I’m here with the mixed breed.”

“My name is Bijou,” a familiar voice says.

The first voice chuckles spitefully. “If you’re a jewel, I’m a saint.”

No way. I look through the little peephole on the door and see a skinny maniac with wild hair and a leather vest. Beside him is my former nurse. I yank the door open and rush them inside. “Who are you?” I ask as I shut the door behind them.

“We’re the cavalry, you ungrateful bastard! Name’s Jean, if you need to be so fucking intrusive. Show some damned respect for your elders. Or at the least, be nice when there’s a piece of ass in the room. You’ll never get one like this if you’re so fucking paranoid, parasite.”

“Parasite?”

The stranger seems casually shocked, somehow. “You can’t be that fucking stupid! Did your parents raise a scraggly moron who can’t recognize a three-syllable word in his own fucking native language? Don’t answer that; I don’t care.”

Bijou looks embarrassed. I take advantage of the silence to ask, “Who is this guy?”

“Ha!” he shouts, “I’m the only one in this room who can tell the difference between Prokofiev and a proctologist.”

Somehow, he manages to yell every word without any noticeable emotion. Bijou says, “Michael said it was okay if he saw you.”

“Shut it, half-corpse. I can speak for myself.” He steps toward me and pulls a barber’s razor out of a vest pocket. “Join me outside for a moment, psycho. I need to talk to you.”

Before I can respond, he grabs me by the collar and yanks me toward the door. Bijou steps toward us. Suddenly, the guy is holding the barber’s razor to her throat. “Calm down, jewel girl.” A horrifying grin morphs his face; his fangs seem to glint in the limited light. “I’m just gonna have a nice conversation with him. You stay here and rest a minute. How’s that sound?”

He doesn’t wait for her to reply. Instead, he pulls me toward the door, opens it, and throws me out into the hall. “What the hell is your prob—” He cuts me short by pressing me against the opposite wall and stuffing the now-folded razor into my hand.

“The blade is silver,” he says before I can react. “Consider it a gift. I don’t like answering questions, so I’ll explain it as quickly as I can while dumbing it down for you. Fuck, you’re ugly! If I didn’t know you were a freak, I’d assume you were deformed in the womb.
